Meet SEFA’s Advisory Board

20 June 2017

Lab Design

In the fall of 2013 SEFA Executive Director David J. Sutton proposed the formation of an Advisory Board to reinforce SEFA’s objective of creating safe, sustainable laboratory environments. It was envisioned as a way of acknowledging outstanding achievements in laboratory design by a select group of world-re-known design professionals. The intent was not only to honor these individuals but also afford them an opportunity to collaborate with their peers while providing direction and guidance for the next generation of laboratory professionals as well as the Lab Furniture and Equipment Industry as a whole.

SEFA’s Board of Directors embraced the idea and in the winter of 2014 SEFA’s first Advisory Board was formed. The success of this addition to the SEFA Membership structure surpassed all expectations.

Some of the Advisory Board Members have served as the judges for SEFA’s Student Design Competitions, while others have taken an active role on SEFA’s Committees to provide input on updates to current SEFA Standards as well as the development of new standards.

Many of our Advisory Board Members have served as keynote speakers for SEFA Events at ARABLAB. Attendees are always keen to hear about their world-class award winning projects.

Dan Watch, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, Science + Technology Global Market Leader , Perkins + Will, Atlanta, made the first Advisory Board Member presentation at ARABLAB in 2014 when he introduced the 2013 Lab of the Year – CREATE Singapore – Campus for Excellence and Technological Enterprise.

In 2015, Advisory Board Member Punit Jain, AIA, LEED Fellow, Vice President, Cannon Design, spoke about Current Innovations and World Class Lab Facilities.

In 2016, RFD President and founding Principal Malcolm Barksdale, AIA NCARB was joined by Lloyd Fisk, AIA, LEED AP, RFD Principal and Co-Chair of our Advisory Board, in presenting the 2015 R & D Lab of the Year – SAHMRI – The South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute.

In 2017, Victor Cardona, AIA, NCARB, Vice President, SmithGroupJJR provided the keynote -- “Responsive Laboratories for Changing Academic and Research Needs” which included a virtual tour of the 2016 R & D Lab of the Year, The University of Illinois Champaign Urbana –Champaign Electrical Engineering Building.

In 2017 SEFA partnered with ARABLAB to present The Lab Design Symposium featuring Advisory Board Members:

Victor Cardona - Selecting Sustainable Equipment for your Lab and Vivarium - A Look at what is available and Return on Investment;

Brian Richard, AIA NCARB, Executive Vice President, Science & Technology Leader, Kirksey Architects, Safe Chemical Management - Design Strategies for Large Footprint Labs and Campus Users; and

Dario Tonelli, Laborplaner Tonelli AG, Innovative Laboratory Planning—A European Perspective;

SEFA’s Advisory Board Members regularly present at SEFA Annual Meetings and Conferences and Expos in the U.S. and globally at other events such as Analytica China, ACHEMA, and this fall at the International Lab Design Conference in Madrid.

Plans are underway for 2018. Once again, we are proud to have an Advisory Board Member firm (HOK) involved in the 2017 Lab of the Year – the Francis Crick Institute in London and we are talking about expanding Arablab’s Lab Design Showcase to include two days of presentations.
